Questions IT Consulting Candidates Should Ask in Job Interviews
Ideally you are setting up the interview for an IT consulting position to ask questions to which you already know the answer from the information you have about the company and the role. This approach gives you the opportunity to sell yourself in the interview in a targeted way because you already know how to respond with specific information about your IT consulting experience. With this level of preparation for the interview you will do a significantly better job of determining if the role is right for you.
Your objectives are to gather as much information about the IT consulting role, the qualifications needed, and to demonstrate that you have the skills and experience for what they need and that you are interested in the opportunity.
- What does the candidate you are looking for need to be successful in this role?
- What are the top 3 things you are looking for in a candidate? “Great – that is who I am and here are some examples of my experience which highlight those characteristics.”
- What are the biggest challenges I will face in this role?
- What has been missing in the candidates you have seen so far?
- What is your management style?
- If I were to exceed your expectations, what would I have to do?
- Ask the person who is interviewing you: How long have you been at the company? Who do you report to? What are your biggest challenges?
- Tell me about the corporate culture.
- What does the organization stand for? Core Values? (More for a Permanent Opportunity)
- To whom does this role report?
- What are the short/long term goals for this department and how do they relate to the company as a whole? (More for a Permanent Opportunity)
- You should communicate at the end of the interview if you are interested and ask what the next steps will be.
Helpful hint: Speak clearly and be prepared to listen. Don’t forget that an interview is a two-way conversation. Everyone has something to learn.
